Honorary Consuls in Chile

Honorary Consuls Build Regional Bridges Between Chile and the Netherlands

Honorary consuls play a fundamental role in strengthening international ties at the local level. Appointed by the King of the Netherlands, they represent and promote Dutch interests in the regions of Chile. Their work combines diplomacy, consular assistance to Dutch citizens, and the promotion of economic ties between both countries.

There are five honorary consuls spread across Chile—from Iquique in the far north to Punta Arenas in the deep south. They are chosen for their strong ties to the Netherlands, though they may not be Dutch or speak Dutch. Their role is to assist Dutch nationals with consular issues such as stolen passports, legal troubles, or serious health concerns. They also help Dutch descendants with nationality-related matters, like applying for a passport. In recent years, our honorary consuls have become increasingly active in the economic sphere, identifying opportunities for Dutch businesses and connecting the embassy in Santiago with regional and local authorities when needed.

What does a honorary consul do?

Honorary consuls serve as regional bridges between our countries, ensuring that diplomatic relations extend beyond Santiago. The honorary consuls in Chile:

  • Assist Dutch citizens with consular services, such as guidance in emergencies or facilitating documentation.

  • Promote cultural, economic, and academic exchanges.

  • Support trade and investment by connecting Dutch companies to Chilean opportunities.

  • Act as a point of contact for regional and local authorities, institutions, and communities.

How are honorary consuls selected?

Honorary consuls are chosen based on their local networks, professional experience, and commitment to support international cooperation. They are respected figures in business, academia, or public service, serving as trusted representatives. Their appointment is formalized through a designation by the King of the Netherlands and recognition by Chile.

Chile is a geographically long country, and to ensure adequate service we currently have five honorary consuls, covering regions from the far North to the deep South.
