Agriculture and food processing - Poland

Agriculture and food processing

Finding solutions together

Agriculture and food processing is a very important branch of the Polish economy. Further development of this sector will have a significant impact on the condition of Polish agriculture. The Netherlands, which for many years has been the second world exporter of agri-food products, has modern technologies that can support the development of Polish agriculture.

Poles have always loved to surround themselves with flowers, and due to the growing wealth of the Polish economy, the demand for flowers is also constantly growing. This is reflected in the statistics: since Poland's accession to the European Union, Poland has regularly imported more and more flowers until it has become the fifth largest recipient of flowers from the Netherlands. As interest from the Polish side continues and the market still seems to be insatiable, the Embassy facilitates bilateral cooperation, trade missions, participation of Dutch companies in fairs, reports and tries to make the flower trade ... flourish.

To emphasize the love for nature and ornamental plants, the Dutch Garden was created in the Royal Łazienki Museum. The garden is a perfect example of the concept of a 'green city', and thanks to the excellent design of the Dutch landscape architect Niek Roozen, it is attractive all year round.

Dairy sector

Dairy sector
Poland has a favorable climate and a good agricultural sector for milk production. In particular, the country offers competitive advantages in terms of prices and costs. Currently, there are about 130,000 dairy farms in Poland with about 2.3 million cows. Wielkopolska and Podlaskie are the 2 voivodeships with the strongest presence of dairy and processing plants. In order for this sector to continue to develop dynamically, cowsheds must be equipped with modern technologies. As the Netherlands is also a large producer of dairy products, it also has world-class technology for milking and milk processing, which is desired by Polish milk producers.

Circular agriculture

As Poland is becoming more and more aware of environmental protection and climate change, technological solutions within the framework of circular agriculture naturally meet with increasing interest. One of the concepts is the philosophy of the green city, which is a solution that combines knowledge from many sectors at once. The second chance in circular agriculture is to improve the quality and fertilization of soils. Therefore, for several years now, the Embassy has been participating in the so-called Circular Week every year to bring the latest solutions related to circular agriculture closer to the Polish recipient.

Organic matter in the soil

Polish agricultural land is very sandy and contains relatively little phosphate, nitrate, potassium and organic matter. The average content of organic matter in Poland is 2.2%, but 60% of the soil has less than 2% humus. Polish farmers traditionally care about the level of agricultural culture and therefore traditionally used a lot of artificial fertilizers to improve its condition. On average, farmers spend about 20% of their income on it.

More and more attention is paid to maintaining the content of organic matter, which is limited in Poland. The Netherlands, as a large producer of pigs and dairy cattle, has considerable resources of good quality organic matter, which, in addition to macro elements, such as NPK, contains microelements that are crucial for good yield and soil condition in the long term. The Embassy supports activities to expand knowledge in the field of soil care.
