1530TH (SPECIAL) MEETING OF THE OSCE PERMANENT COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM 1: “THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION’S ONGOING AGGRESSION AGAINST UKRAINE” 25 AUGUST 2025
STATEMENT BY THE KINGDOM OF THE NETHERLANDS
STATEMENT BY THE KINGDOM OF THE NETHERLANDS AS DELIVERED BY H.E. AMBASSADOR MONIQUE DE RUIJTER AT THE 1530TH (SPECIAL) MEETING OF THE OSCE PERMANENT COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM 1: “THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION’S ONGOING AGGRESSION AGAINST UKRAINE” 25 AUGUST 2025
The Netherlands fully aligns with the statement of Denmark on behalf of EU Member States and other Participating States. In addition, I would like to add the following remarks in my national capacity.
On 24 August 1991, Ukraine became a free, independent nation. Thirty-four years later – in the face of a brutal unprovoked war of aggression – Ukrainians are standing strong, inspiring the world with their courage and determination to defend their democracy.
Since the start of the war, the Netherlands has committed over 20,6 billion euro’s in support to Ukraine. From sending equipment and training Ukrainian soldiers, to carrying out maintenance, we are playing our part in supporting Ukraine in its fight. Together with many other participating States, we are working to hold the Russian regime accountable and help Ukraine rebuild – all as part of our larger efforts to help Ukraine achieve a just and lasting peace.
The collective strength of all countries who strive to uphold the UN Charter and OSCE core principles and commitments exceed Russia’s by far. For Ukraine, for international law, and for our European security: we have to stand up united to the one participating State that is undermining our common security. In this light, we will continue to pursue coordinated military support to Ukraine's Armed Forces in order to bolster its efforts to defend itself, protect civilians against air attacks, achieve Peace through Strength, and deter future aggression. Most recently, the Netherlands was the first country to pledge EUR 500 million to NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative. We commend those who have followed and call upon others to step up as well, so we can continue to ensure that Ukraine has what it needs to fight for its freedom and independence.
The Russian Federation claims new innocent victims in Ukraine on a daily basis. We welcome US President Trump‘s actions to end Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, and we call upon the Russian Federation to stop its unlawful attacks on Ukrainian civilians and participate in peace negotiations in good faith. The Netherlands will continue to actively contribute to all efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace.
As we mark this Ukrainian Independence Day, the Netherlands stands steadfast alongside our Ukrainian friends.
