The Netherlands is coming to San Diego this week with a Pop-Up Consulate to strengthen the business ties between Southern California and the Dutch business community.

A team from the Dutch Consulate General in San Francisco will work from San Diego to connect on topics such as tech innovation, sustainability, smart cities, and urban and green mobility. There will be meetings with Dutch and American companies and government agencies. The Pop-Up Consulate will also renew passports of  Dutch nationals in the San Diego area.

The Netherlands, small in population but large in foreign investment in the United States, is a European hub for tech and circular economy, but also for agriculture and logistics. California exports more than $5.6 billion (2020) worth of goods and services to the Netherlands, which supports more than 68,500 jobs in the state. The state imports $1.6 billion (2020) in goods and services from the Netherlands.

Consul General Dirk Janssen: “San Diego is recognized as a leading hub in the startup, biotech, and semiconductor industry. It’s no wonder Dutch ASML has a big office here, and many Dutch startups such as Plantible Foods have found their home here. I see many links with the Netherlands, with a strong focus on innovation in especially life sciences. I’m excited to connect the Netherlands and Southern California, and strengthen our friendship and business ties.”

The Consulate General delegation will meet with companies such as Qualcom and Cymer (acquired by ASML in 2013), and hold discussions with the Port of San Diego, San Diego Regional EDC, World Trade Center, and San Diego’s Regional Planning Agency. The group will also visit BluNalu and the Timken Museum.
