Job description

As a Policy Officer for Cultural Affairs USA, your mission is to create opportunities for Dutch cultural expression in the US, in line with the priorities set out by the 2025-2028 Dutch cultural policy framework. In this role, you help the Dutch cultural and creative sector find audiences and markets across the United States.

This means that, as part of a small and agile team:

  • you maintain relevant networks, both in the cultural field and on the governmental/institutional level, in the USA but also in the Netherlands;
  • you strategically tap into your networks to invite interest in the offerings of the Dutch cultural sector to US audiences and institutions;
  • you evaluate requests for assistance and financial support, according to the general guidelines of the Dutch Policy for international cultural cooperation;
  • you are alert to new opportunities for cultural exchange, and are well informed about new developments in the (inter)national cultural arena;
  • You help amplify Dutch cultural expression taking place in the United States through our dedicated online and digital communication channels under the “Dutch Culture USA” umbrella.

Your profile

As a cultural professional, you bring (local, national and international) expertise, experience and networks in one or more cultural disciplines. Given the composition of the team, preference for this position is given to candidates with extensive knowledge and expertise in the specific fields of visual arts, design, and /or old masters. You are no stranger to the world of musea, galleries and art-fairs throughout the USA.   Additionally, as part of a small team, you are willing and able to work as a cultural generalist and take up projects across all arts disciplines (including performing arts, film, heritage).

As a project-manager, you bring demonstrable excellence in the organisation and coordination of budgetary cycles and their administration.

As a communicator, you have excellent writing skills in various registers: you know how to draft concise messages for social media channels, and to craft input for impactful speeches for management for cultural events.

As a team player, you pair professional confidence to a down-to-earth and hands-on mentality which allows you to navigate different levels of the cultural bureaucracy. You have a transparent approach to work—such as sharing relevant information and contacts within the team—as well as maintaining clear and open communication with colleagues and the leadership of the Consulate-General.

As a civil servant, you uphold the highest standards of integrity and responsibility, reflecting the public trust placed in an international governmental institution.

Occasional travel (throughout the US) and working outside office-hours is not a problem for you.

Result areas and results

  • You bring and are able to build, maintain and use relevant networks in the areas of your responsibility (e.g. visual arts).
  • You keep your knowledge of relevant developments in the areas under your responsibility up to date;
  • Your projects are planned, organized and evaluated in time; your decisions are taken in accordance with the applicable internal and external frameworks/rules/agreements.
  • You position yourself as an expert in the areas of your responsibility and are seen as a valued partner internally and externally.
  • You keep systems and records in good order.
  • You know how to translate abstract policy into concrete, realistic and context-specific projects.
  • You are able to effectively engage and influence parties both within and outside the mission.
  • Sharing information comes natural to you, for the benefit of the team, the mission and the organization. Relevant knowledge is available to and/or is shared with relevant parties.

Knowledge, skills, competences

Level of education: BA/MA
Field: arts and culture / curatorial / project-management or related
Level of experience: at least 5 years of experience required

  • Demonstrable background (study), experience (5+ years), and expertise in the cultural field as described above
  • Hands-on mentality: skilled in financial/administrative processes and their coordination.
  • Excellent writing skills, skilled in communication (social media)
  • Team player (people’s person) with a high level of integrity
  • (Near-) Native speaker of English; Knowledge of Dutch would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of the rules, regulations, policies and developments related to the field of work
  • General understanding of communications and public information
  • Strategic insight
  • Skilled networker
  • Skilled in preparing/coordinating meetings/incoming and outgoing missions/products
