Thank you, Mr. President,

The Kingdom of the Netherlands aligns itself with the statements of the EU and the Group of Friends of Accountability, and thanks the Commission of Inquiry for its oral update. 

Once more, the Commission’s update illustrates Russia’s total disregard for international law and civilian lives. At the same time, it highlights how important accountability for these gross violations is. 

We wish to draw particular attention to the appalling situation in the Ukrainian territories temporarily occupied by Russia. Civilians are subject to a long list of discriminatory policies that violate their fundamental freedoms and human rights. Ukrainian children, from the youngest age, are exposed to indoctrination and militarization in schools – institutions that should be safe spaces where they can learn and develop freely. Taken together, these measures reflect a broader effort to suppress and erase Ukrainian identity. 

Mr. President,

The Netherlands once again urges Russia to end its war, withdraw from the Ukrainian territories it temporarily occupies, cease attempts to erase Ukrainian identity, and grant independent monitors full and unhindered access.

Moreover, we do not recognize the so-called “State Duma elections” held by the Russian Federation in the temporarily occupied territories.
