Myanmar: Interactive Dialogue with Special Rapporteur on Myanmar

News item | 13-03-2026 | 14:06

Statement of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, delivered by Raban de Bie, First Secretary, Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Geneva.

Thank you Mr. Special Rapporteur,

We fully align with the European Union's statement and thank you for your report and your relentless and extremely valuable work over the years.
The Netherlands remains deeply concerned about the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. Conditions for credible and transparent elections, in line with international standards, were not met in the electoral process in December 2025 and January 2026. The military has so far shown no significant signs of changing its behavior, as evidenced by airstrikes that continued throughout the election process, targeting civilian sites. We call for an end to all forms of violence and the release of all prisoners arbitrarily detained, including those arrested under the Election Protection Law.
The Netherlands remains deeply concerned about the ongoing grave violations and abuses of human rights and international humanitarian law, including arbitrary attacks, extrajudicial killings, forced conscription, torture and sexual and gender-based violence. We call for full accountability for the crimes committed and reiterate our support for international judicial mechanisms.
We furthermore call for immediate, safe and unhindered humanitarian access to all communities in need.

Mr. Special Rapporteur,

How can the international community support civilians and human rights defenders on the ground, including by improving monitoring, documentation and prevention of further violations?
