Benelux statement delivered by H.E. Mr. Lars Tummers, Deputy Permanent Representative, Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Geneva.

Thank you Mr. President,

I am honored to deliver this statement on behalf of Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. We fully align with the European Union's statement and thank the High Commissioner for his report.

It has been five years since the 2021 military coup. The Benelux countries remain alarmed by the ongoing crisis situation in Myanmar. The recent electoral exercise of December 2025 and January 2026 took place in a context that clearly failed to meet the basic conditions for genuine, free and fair elections.

We remain deeply concerned with the continued dire violations and abuses of human rights and international humanitarian law, including indiscriminate attacks, extrajudicial killings, forced conscription, torture and sexual and gender-based violence. The situation in Rakhine State and other ethnic areas is particularly alarming, and the Rohingya and other minorities remain at acute risk. Children in conflict-affected communities remain highly vulnerable to sexual violence, recruitment and use, killing and maiming, abduction, detention and exploitation. The humanitarian crisis is severe, with millions in need of assistance and many displaced within Myanmar and across borders while access and funding are increasingly challenging. We call for respect of the principle of non-refoulement and underline the importance of accountability mechanisms.

Mr. High Commissioner,

Which forms of pressure and support from Member States are, in your view, most effective at this stage?
