Statement of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, delivered by H.E. Ambassador Erica Schouten, Permanent Representative, Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands

Thank you Mr. Vice-President,

The Kingdom of the Netherlands aligns itself with the EU statement and thanks the High Commissioner for his update.

The annual update again paints a very bleak and worrying picture. Human rights and multilateral human rights cooperation continue to be under threat. It is imperative that the crises of our times are addressed through the multilateral institutions that allow us to join hands, and with respect for the safety, security, dignity and wellbeing of all. We reaffirm our commitment to multilateral human rights cooperation, our continued support to the High Commissioner and his office, and our commitment to the success and effectiveness of the Human Rights Council.

Mr. Vice-President,

We also want to express our concern about the deeply worrying trends pertaining to the safety of journalists and aid workers, and in particular the relentless violence against and sometimes even deliberate targeting of both journalists and humanitarian workers in conflict situations. These attacks directly undermine the international rules based order, and also further endanger the civilian populations affected by conflict. We call for an end to the impunity and increased efforts to ensure accountability. Unhindered and safe access for both journalists and humanitarian workers is essential, and they must always be protected.

Thank you
