Statement of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, delivered by H.E. Lars Tummers, Deputy Permanent Representative, Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands

Thank you Mr. President,

The Kingdom of the Netherlands thanks the Fact Finding Mission for their important work investigating human rights violations in Iran following the death of Mahsa Jina Amini.

Her death, the mission finds, was caused by violence she was subjected to while in custody. We condemn the serious human rights violations Iran has committed against those expressing support for women and girls’ rights during the nationwide protests that followed Amini’s death. Many of those violations, such as murder, disproportionate use of force, torture, sexual violence including rape, amount to crimes against humanity. We admire the courage of those continuing to stand up for their rights.

Those responsible need to be held accountable. Therefore, we strongly support the FFM’s call for a limited extension of its mandate to ensure the effective preservation of evidence.

In addition, the surge in executions over the last year is deplorable. We urge Iran to halt all executions, in particular of alleged juvenile offenders and those individuals sentenced to death solely for their participation in the nationwide protests, in compliance with its obligations under the ICCPR.

Allow me to finish with a question to the experts. The report shows the institutionalized discriminatory system against women and girls and ethnic and religious minorities in Iran. What can the international community do more to counter this?

I thank you.
