Sudan: Enhanced Interactive Dialogue on oral update of the Fact-Finding Mission for the Sudan
Statement of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, delivered by H.E. Ambassador Lars Tummers, Deputy Permanent Representative, Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands
Thank you Mr. President,
The Kingdom of the Netherlands
aligns itself with the statement of the EU and the Coalition of
Atrocity Prevention.
Humanitarian needs in Sudan continue to
rise at an alarming rate. Millions of people are facing acute food
insecurity, displacement and the collapse of basic services. The
anticipated droughts from the next El Niño sketch a bleak picture,
compounded by systematic human rights abuses and a climate of
impunity.
The Netherlands is appalled by the extent and
severity of human rights violations in Sudan, as documented by the
Fact-Finding Mission. Civilians are subjected to relentless violence
and sexual and gender-based violence is rampant. The fighting must
stop, but the protection of civilians must be ensured at all times.
Humanitarian workers must be granted safe and unhindered access, and
international humanitarian law must be fully respected by all parties
to the conflict. Deliberate attacks on civilian targets are
unacceptable and must be thoroughly investigated.
In this
light, we commend the important work of the Fact-Finding Mission.
Holding perpetrators accountable lays the foundation for justice and
sustainable peace.
Members of the Fact-Finding Mission,
In accordance with the question posed by the EU, how can we further
support your work, in particular to ensure that the experiences of
women and girls are fully reflected in your findings?
Thank
you.
