Item 4: General debate on human rights situations that require the Council’s attention

News item | 23-09-2025 | 17:24

Delivered by Erica Schouten Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands

Thank you Mr. President,

The Kingdom of the Netherlands aligns itself with the EU statement.

We are deeply concerned about a number of crises and grave human rights situations.

The suffering of the civilian population in Gaza is indescribable. We reiterate our strong call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the release of all hostages and the immediate delivery of much more humanitarian aid. We are deeply concerned by the intensification of the Israeli operation in Gaza and the deteriorating situation in the West Bank. We condemn Israeli steps and statements that allude to annexation. All parties must fully comply with their obligations under international human rights law.

The continuous and large-scale violations in Sudan remain profoundly concerning, especially widespread sexual violence and child recruitment. We urgently call on the warring parties to protect civilians, end the fighting and to enable a lasting ceasefire, and to fully cooperate with the independent international Fact-Finding Mission.

We condemn in the strongest possible terms Russia’s continuing war of aggression against Ukraine. Russia must immediately and unconditionally cease its aggression and withdraw all of its military. We deplore the mounting civilian death toll and the ongoing atrocities committed by Russian forces, including torture, sexual violence, and summary executions. We call on Russia to return all arbitrarily detained civilians and forcibly transferred or deported persons.

We call on China to implement all recommendations of the UPR, Treaty Bodies and the OHCHR’s Xinjiang report. The Freedom of Religion or Belief of Uyghur Muslims and other faiths must be protected. We also remain concerned about the restrictions on media freedom, including in Hong Kong.

Thank you.
