BELARUS: Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation.
Statement on behalf of the Benelux countries delivered by Ambassador, Deputy Permanent Representative Lars Tummers, Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the UN in Geneva
Thank you Mr. President,
I am honoured to deliver this statement on behalf of the Benelux: Belgium, Luxembourg and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. We align ourselves with the EU statement and strongly condemn the appalling pattern of human rights violations in Belarus.
While we welcome the release of a number of political prisoners, these releases are overshadowed by the revolving-door pattern of repression which demonstrates that there has been no structural improvement in the human rights situation. We are furthermore appalled by persistent reports of severe ill-treatment in detention, and strongly reiterate our call for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners.
We are equally alarmed at the continued deterioration of an already severely restricted civic space, with increasing pressure on civil society, independent media and human rights defenders. The systematic misuse of legislation to criminalize peaceful civic engagement, cultural expression and independent journalism is unacceptable.
All these actions are fundamentally incompatible with Belarus’ obligations under international human rights law. Those responsible for serious human rights violations and abuses must be held accountable. The Benelux countries remain committed to supporting international efforts aimed at documenting violations, preserving evidence and combating impunity.
Special Rapporteur,
What opportunities exist for the international community to
strengthen accountability efforts and support Belarusian civil
society, both inside and outside the country?
Thank you
