The Protocol and Host Country Affairs Department (DPG) and VerYBZ, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ network for early-career staff members, jointly organised a two-day course entitled ‘The Netherlands, host country - The Hague, city of peace and justice’, which took place on 20 and 21 November. Their aim was to offer insights into the role of the Netherlands as an international host country, and the role of The Hague in particular.

On the first day participants had an opportunity to find out exactly what DPG does. Its director and deputy director, the Ambassador for International Organisations and the head of the Visits and Events Division (DPG/BE) all discussed their day-to-day tasks, while a panel discussion and a visit to the International Criminal Court (ICC) offered a more in-depth look at specific topics. The day ended with a networking event at the British embassy.

On the second day participants visited the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Peace Palace. They also attended a presentation on cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Diplomatic Front Office of the police in The Hague. Finally, representatives of PAX and Amnesty International offered their insights on peace and human rights.

As one participant reflected: ‘The combination and diversity of topics and the enthusiasm of all the speakers made this an extremely interesting course.’

We can look back on a successful joint effort with VerYBZ, and we’re very pleased that we were able to acquaint participants with our work.
