The Schoof Cabinet has fallen: PVV ministers resign
As of today, the Schoof Cabinet has officially fallen. Prime Minister Dick Schoof announced the cabinet’s resignation following a nearly two-hour Council of Ministers meeting. The resignation comes after PVV leader Geert Wilders withdrew from the governing coalition earlier in the day.
Wilders demanded that his coalition partners sign off on eight out of ten proposed asylum policy measures. However, the VVD, NSC, and BBB declined to do so, prompting the PVV’s withdrawal from the coalition and the resignation of all PVV ministers.
Today, Prime Minister Schoof formally offered the resignation of his cabinet to the King at Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague. From that moment, the cabinet will continue in a caretaker (demissionary) capacity, meaning ministers will only handle current, ongoing affairs.
The Schoof Cabinet was sworn in on 2 July 2024, making its term less than one year, the shortest duration since Balkenende I (87 days) and Van Agt II (244 days).
Although the cabinet has now fallen, ministers and state secretaries, excluding those from the PVV, will remain in office in a demissionary role. The Prime Minister has expressed the hope that the House of Representatives will grant his cabinet the mandate to continue addressing key national challenges such as housing, security, social stability, migration, and nitrogen policy.
