We work together on these themes

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Chisinau, though small and only recently established on April 27, 2023, is firmly committed to strengthening diplomatic ties and supporting Moldova’s development. Despite its size, the embassy is an active and dedicated presence, working tirelessly to foster stronger relations through a range of initiatives and partnerships.

Our efforts center on deepening bilateral cooperation and contributing to Moldova’s progress across key areas, in which we strive to make a meaningful and lasting impact through consistent, hands-on engagement.
To guide our efforts, our work is structured around six strategic clusters, each designed to address specific priorities and maximize our impact on the ground.

The Netherlands Embassy in Moldova places a high priority on promoting good governance and democratic processes. Through various programs, the embassy supports initiatives aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and public participation in government affairs. Collaborative efforts with local and international partners help strengthen the rule of law and democratic institutions. In addition, the embassy strongly supports public administration reform in Moldova. A key focus is on capacity building for public officials to ensure effective governance. For example, the embassy supports the School of Local Mayors and Officials in promoting good governance practices across the country. These initiatives reflect the Netherlands’ ongoing commitment to fostering democracy and good governance in Moldova.

Recognizing the complex security challenges in the region, the Dutch Embassy in Moldova is actively engaged in countering hybrid threats and strengthening Moldova’s resilience. This includes supporting efforts to enhance cybersecurity, combat disinformation, and safeguard national security. As of 2024, we are supporting cooperation between the Information Technology and Cyber Security Service (STISC) and the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), in partnership with the EU Partnership Mission (EUPM), to bolster Moldova’s cyber resilience, particularly in preparation for the upcoming elections later this year. In addition, the visit of the Dutch Minister of Defense in April 2024 served as a clear reminder of the Netherlands’ continued commitment to Moldova’s security. The embassy also works closely with Moldovan authorities and international partners to build robust systems capable of withstanding various forms of hybrid warfare.

The Netherlands Embassy in Moldova is committed to promoting sustainable trade and investment. This commitment is reflected in initiatives that encourage environmentally responsible business practices and support green investments, such as the first Netherlands–Moldova Business Forum, held in October 2023, as well as the Benelux-Moldova Business Forum in March 2025. The embassy collaborates closely with both Dutch and Moldovan companies to identify opportunities that align economic growth with environmental sustainability. It also supports youth entrepreneurship through the newly established Tulip Business Incubator. In addition, the embassy seeks to foster inclusive economic development across all regions and demographics of Moldova by supporting initiatives like the Transnistria Business Hub in Tiraspol.

The promotion of LGBTI rights is a key priority for the Netherlands Embassy in Moldova. The embassy supports initiatives such as the Queer Café in Chisinau and BangBang, both of which advocate for the rights and inclusion of LGBTI individuals. By working with local NGOs, government institutions, and international partners, the embassy contributes to fostering a more inclusive and respectful society. These efforts include awareness campaigns and cultural events that celebrate diversity and promote tolerance. Such actions are part of the broader commitment of the Netherlands to advancing equality and human rights for all people in Moldova.

The Netherlands Embassy in Moldova is a strong advocate for press freedom and the protection of journalists. It supports initiatives aimed at creating a safer environment for media professionals and promoting independent journalism in all of Moldova’s spoken languages. The embassy contributes to strengthening journalistic standards and media integrity through projects such as the Tulip Press Awards, as well as its support for outlets like Nokta and Newsmaker.md, both of which provide independent reporting in the Russian language. Through collaboration with media organizations, the embassy works to uphold freedom of expression and ensure broad access to reliable information. These efforts underscore the Netherlands’ commitment to a free and independent press as a cornerstone of democratic society.

JJustice reform is a cornerstone of the Dutch Embassy’s agenda in Moldova. The embassy supports initiatives designed to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and independence of the judicial system. This is achieved primarily through our support for the CILC and its collaboration with Moldovan authorities, ensuring lasting improvements in pre-vetting processes and related commissions—such as the second vetting commission, which is fully supported by the Netherlands. In addition, partnerships with local judicial bodies and international legal experts promote best practices and reform efforts. Training programs for legal professionals and advocacy for legislative changes are also integral to the embassy’s strategy for strengthening the rule of law. These initiatives are essential for ensuring justice and fairness within Moldova's legal system.
