After weeks of preparation, the long-awaited visit of Prime Minister Rutte finally took place on Tuesday, October 31, and Wednesday, November 1, 2023. The visit aimed to strengthen the good relationship between the Netherlands and Malaysia and enhance collaboration in the areas of high-tech, digitalization, and sustainability. An economic mission involving 25 companies were accompanied by the Prime Minister.

The visit kicked off on the evening of October 31 with a trade dinner in the ballroom of the Sheraton hotel in Petaling Jaya. Representatives from Dutch and Malaysian businesses, along with a delegation from the Malaysian government, attended the event. The highlight of the evening was the signing of various collaboration documents related to water, agriculture, sustainability, and high-tech.

After a night's rest, the program included a business visit to chip machine manufacturer BESI. Both the trade delegation and the Prime Minister were given a tour by Henk Jan Jonge Poerink, Managing Director BESI Asia Pacific. The next agenda item was a meeting with YAB Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Plantation and Commodities Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof to discuss collaboration on the sustainability of palm oil. Symbolically, Prime Minister Rutte and Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah planted a palm tree.

Prime Minister Rutte was then received by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at 'Seri Perdana,' the official residence of the Prime Minister in Putrajaya. Topics of discussion included the shared grief over MH17 and conflicts in the Middle East. The economic and bilateral ties between both countries remain strong.

After lunch, it was finally time for the embassy team to meet Prime Minister Rutte at a great height, the KL Tower. Whilst looking at the view from the top of the KL tower, the embassy team had the chance to shake hands with the Prime Minister.

There was unfortunately little time for extended discussions as the next program item was already underway—a tour of the Islamic Arts Museum, followed by a press meeting with national and international media. After the press meeting, the delegation proceeded to the 6th Malaysia-Netherlands Water Dialogue, where a discussion took place between Prime Minister Rutte and YB Tuan Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change. Topics of the dialogue included the Dutch Risk Reduction team report that was made, with flood mitigating management strategies for Malaysia, that included making use of nature based solutions as well as joint efforts in fighting climate change.

The final agenda item was an interactive discussion session with students on the geopolitics in the Indo-Pacific. After a last selfie, Prime Minister Rutte and his delegation were taken to the plane to continue their journey to Vietnam. It was an intensive but highly successful and fruitful visit.
