Residence Public Tulip Garden Viewing
The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Japan will open its doors to the public for a viewing of the Residence’s Tulip Garden on Friday 3 April and Saturday 4 April 2026. The Ambassador's Residence itself will be open to the public at the same time, only for this special occasion. We hope that you will be able to share the joy of this beautiful spring with us while appreciating the tulips!
■ More than 15,000 tulips
Tulips, the national flower of the Netherlands, along with other
flowers, are a major export industry of the Netherlands. It is said
that about 80% of the world's tulip fields are in the Netherlands.
This year, the garden of the Ambassador’s residence is adorned with
about 15,000 tulips from the Netherlands. Visitors can enjoy a
vibrant display of lush greenery and roughly 7,000 charming companion
plants, primarily grape hyacinths (Muscari), each contributing to a
stunning visual experience.
■ The Ambassador's Residence, open to the public for a special viewing
It has been about 100 years since the first official residence
was destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and rebuilt in
1928. The building, which still retains its traditional rustic
atmosphere, is decorated with traditional and contemporary design
furniture and artwork, including works by 19th century Dutch painter
Hendrik Willem Mesdag and others. Furthermore, in a space featuring
contemporary Dutch design furniture and artworks, you can experience a
special atmosphere where Japan and the Netherlands blend together.
■ Dutch sweets 'Stroopwafel' will also be on sale
The 'Stroopwafel' is said to have originated in Gouda, the
Netherlands, a city famous for its cheese. It is a thin waffle with
caramel syrup in between, and the Dutch way of eating it is to put it
on top of a cup of coffee or other hot drink to soften it before
eating. Profits will be donated to support those in need within Japan;
full details to be reported in due course. Please bring cash and bring
your own eco bag. Paper bags are available for a small fee.
