Dr. M. Tomonaga appointed “Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau”
On Saturday, September 19, 2026, a special ceremony was held in Nagasaki City, where Dr. Masao Tomonaga was appointed “Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau”. Ambassador Gilles Beschoor Plug of the Netherlands in Japan presented the decoration to Dr. Tomonaga.
The Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands has decided to
confer this decoration upon Dr. Masao Tomonaga, President of the
Nagasaki Prefecture Hibakusha Health Handbook Holders’ Association and
Representative of the Committee for the Maintenance of the Memorials
to the Victims of Fukuoka Prisoner of War Camp No. 2 and No. 14,
Professor Emeritus of Nagasaki University & Visiting Professor at
the Research Center for Nuclear Weapons Abolition (RECNA), Nagasaki
University, and Director Emeritus of the Japanese Red Cross Nagasaki
Atomic Bomb Hospital.
It recognizes Dr. Tomonaga’s long-term
contributions to society, highly commending his activities bridging
WWII Dutch history and reconciliation, as well as his lifelong
scientific and humanitarian dedication to the anti-nuclear movement.
The order is a prestigious honor from the Kingdom of the Netherlands
presented to individuals who have made outstanding contributions in
fields of national or international significance.

The decoration awarded to Dr. Tomonaga is an expression of the deep appreciation and respect of the Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands for his longstanding efforts to preserve the memories of the war and support the process of reconciliation. Although the decoration is awarded to Dr. Tomonaga as an individual, we would also like to use this occasion to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the members of the committee who have supported this work over many years.
