Water Security - Costa Rica-en
70% of the planet is covered by water, and more than 90% of major
disasters are related to it. Climate change exacerbates problems of
access, scarcity, and pollution. Addressing these challenges requires
collaboration, knowledge sharing, and technology; no country can do it
alone.
Central America is highly vulnerable to climate change,
with impacts such as droughts, storms, sea level rise, and
biodiversity loss. The magnitude of these challenges varies across the
region: Guatemala and Honduras face greater difficulties, while Costa
Rica shows greater resilience, although it remains exposed to
significant risks.
The Netherlands' experience as a densely populated delta has generated unique knowledge in water management and urban resilience. Through innovation, collaboration, and the application of integrated solutions, water supply, sanitation, and wastewater recovery are improved, strengthening water security. The government is committed to contributing to global water security.
Programs such as Partners for Water (PVW) promote water security in deltas and river basins through innovative Dutch solutions. In Guatemala, initiatives to clean up rivers polluted by plastics are supported, and in Honduras, through the Disaster Risk Reduction Program, mitigation plans are developed to protect lives, livelihoods, and property from natural hazards in a sustainable and cost-effective manner.
