Agriculture and Sustainable Agri-Food System - Costa Rica-en
Climate change poses a critical challenge to sustainable agricultural development in Central America, particularly affecting smallholder farmers whose productivity and competitiveness have declined due, among other causes, to a lack of adequate risk management tools and climate services. This situation directly impacts agricultural production and the availability of key commodities, making the search for sustainable and resilient solutions urgent.
The agricultural sector is among the most affected, as many small producers have limited resources and capacity to adapt. This sector is strategic, contributing around 10% of regional GDP, employing one-fifth of the working population, and generating more than half of Central American exports.
The Netherlands offers experience, innovation, and expertise in sustainable agriculture to address these challenges. Its approach combines the efforts of government, research institutes, and the private sector to develop technologies and practices that enhance the production of safe, high-quality goods, while promoting biodiversity and reducing waste. Through these partnerships, the Netherlands provides concrete opportunities to strengthen farmers’ capacities, improve productivity, and promote sustainable and resilient agricultural practices. By working alongside local governments, NGOs, research institutes, and businesses, the Netherlands is consolidating its role as a strategic partner in driving agricultural development in the region and contributing to long-term sustainable agri-food systems.
