25 Jul PROMPT: Design x AI Contemporary Design Practices in the age of Artificial Intelligence
Taking visual design as its perspective, this exhibition seeks to re-examine the shifts in the expressive context, working methods, and internal structures of design following the intervention of artificial intelligence.
The role of AI is evolving from a mere assistive tool to an active participant deeply embedded in the design generation process—spanning tasks from image generation, information organization, and text editing to typeface expansion, motion graphics production, and coding.
Concurrently, certain design practices are leveraging AI and programmatic logic to establish novel modes of visual production, enabling design elements—such as color, typography, graphics, layout, and motion—to be organized, combined, and continuously evolved within established rules and generative logic.
The exhibition uses the "Prompt" as a central thread, framing it as a new design syntax through which designers engage with generative systems. Here, the "Prompt" signifies more than just a command to trigger generation; it represents a design methodology encompassing the articulation of intent, the setting of rules, process control, and the evaluation of outcomes.
Within this framework, the focus of design shifts from merely "what is generated" to the construction of the conditions and mechanisms that drive generation. The object of design is expanding from a singular, static visual output into an open system capable of continuously generating and extending visual content while undergoing constant refinement and iteration through feedback; similarly, the design workflow is transitioning from a linear, result-oriented output model to an open process characterized by generation, feedback, and iteration.
The NL component of Prompt: Design × AI consists of the participation of Dutch co-curator Liza Enebeis and a selection of Dutch designers and studios working at the intersection of AI, design, and technology. Through exhibited works, curatorial collaboration, and public communication, the project presents contemporary Dutch perspectives on AI-driven design practice to audiences in China and encourages cultural exchange between the Netherlands and China. Dutch exhibitors at this exhibition include Random Studio, Richard Vijgen, RNDR, Studio Dumbar, Superposition.
Liza is partner and creative director at Studio Dumbar/DEPT®, an award-winning international agency of Dutch heritage specializing in visual branding and motion.
Liza is directly involved with all the studio’s main projects, including the visual identity for Amsterdam Sinfonietta, D&AD Creativity festival, brand refresh of the van Gogh Museum and co-initiator of DEMO—Design in Motion Festival. She is an MA Design graduate from the Royal College of Art, London. Before joining Studio Dumbar, Liza worked for Pentagram London for several years.
