Tulip Ceremony for Human Rights in Chile

News item | 25-09-2025 | 14:15

Together with Chilean government authorities, representatives of international organizations, ambassadors, and civil society representatives, we marked this milestone: the Human Rights Tulip Ceremony in Chile. We are impressed by the quality of the nominations received, as well as the diversity of topics addressed—women’s rights, LGBTIQ+ rights, freedom of the press, enforced disappearance and missing persons, environmental rights, and Indigenous peoples’ rights, to name a few.

We are honored to announce that the foundation Todo Mejora has been selected to represent Chile in December 2025 in the Netherlands. They will have the opportunity to participate in a specially designed program alongside nine other human rights defenders from around the world: Colombia, Sudan, Somalia, Lebanon, Palestinian Territories, Hungary, Ukraine, Bangladesh, and Indonesia. During the visit to the Netherlands, an award ceremony will be held with the ten participants, from which one winner will be selected to receive a prize of €50,000. The remaining participants will each receive €5,000 to support their human rights work in their respective countries.

We hope that participating in this award program will allow Fundación Todo Mejora to: gain international visibility and recognition; continue developing and expanding its human rights work, reaching more people in more places; and inspire others.

The competition for the central Human Rights Tulip—meaning the final prize awarded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs—will be fierce. Beyond the final prize, the experience, visibility, and exchange offered by this program are already invaluable. Many of the selected countries operate in very different contexts than Chile. With Chile, we share strong democratic values and a commitment to defending human rights. In this regard, Chile plays a vital role in the region, where some countries have very different definitions of what democracy means. We see that Chilean civil society organizations possess expertise and can transcend borders to make an impact across the region.

We believe Chile and the Netherlands are like-minded countries. That doesn’t mean we don’t face challenges in these areas. The world is changing, and everywhere, human rights are under pressure.

Dutch Foreign Policy on Human Rights

The promotion and protection of human rights is a priority in the foreign policy of the Dutch government. It employs a wide range of actions and initiatives aimed at strengthening human rights worldwide: women’s rights and gender equality, LGBTIQ+ rights, freedom of expression, internet freedom and independent journalism, freedom of religion and belief, and support for human rights defenders.

Nomination of Fundación Todo Mejora

This is an organization that typically grants annual awards recognizing the work of other human rights defenders—especially LGBTIQ+—during its annual gala. But now the time has come for them to be honored themselves.
Todo Mejora is an organization dedicated to protecting LGBTIQ+ children and youth, among the most vulnerable members of society. Their app, Hora Segura, has proven to be highly effective and a leader in suicide prevention within this group. Our embassy believes Todo Mejora can expand its reach by joining forces to provide safe spaces for those in need, and even broaden its target audience. Congratulations!

A special thanks to the Human Rights Center of the University of Chile, its director Constanza Nuñez, the faculty, and students—Martina, Martín, and Antonio—who welcomed this project with great enthusiasm and helped us judge the nominations objectively and transparently.
