Europe: Peace Project in Times of Uncertainty
On May 9, Europe Day was commemorated. The Embassy of the Netherlands, along with other member states, participated in a gastronomic showcase of our countries to celebrate the shared values that unite us. This event not only highlighted Europe's rich cultural diversity but also the solidarity and cooperation that are fundamental to the European Union.
The different cultures in the EU were also celebrated.
Today, the European Union represents the world's second-largest economic power and the largest trading bloc. This union has been a beacon of stability and prosperity in an increasingly uncertain world.
In a world of growing uncertainty, this Europe Day offers us a moment to reflect on the foundations of the European Union, which is, above all, a peace project. Since its creation, the EU has worked tirelessly to transform Europe from a war-torn continent into one of peace and cooperation. However, just ten years after the EU was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its contribution to this transformation, the unthinkable happened: another war broke out in Europe. Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine has tested the principles and values upon which the Union is founded.
Faced with this reality, it is more crucial than ever to strengthen ties with like-minded and democratic partners, such as Chile. Although geographically distant, Chile fully shares European values: peace, security, sustainable development, solidarity and mutual respect among peoples, free and fair trade, poverty eradication, human rights protection, and strict respect for the rules-based international order. These shared values are the foundation of strong and lasting cooperation.
More than just a commemoration, this Europe Day is a reaffirmation of our commitment to continue building a fairer, safer, and more sustainable world together—a world where law prevails over force and where international cooperation triumphs over destructive competition. It is a reminder that, despite the challenges, the European Union remains committed to promoting peace and stability worldwide.
