Fellowship description
The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ottawa is currently accepting fellowship applications as part of the Embassy Science Fellows Programme 2027.
The Embassy Science Fellows Programme (ESF-NL) 2027 aims to strengthen the interaction between diplomacy and science by placing researchers at one of 12 Dutch foreign missions for a period of 1 to 3 months. Fellows apply their scientific expertise and international networks to inform and support evidence-informed Dutch foreign policy. In doing so, they contribute to strengthening scientific cooperation with third countries while gaining practical experience in a diplomatic context.
In Canada, the selected fellow will work closely with the Embassy team in Ottawa on the selected topic, "Trusted AI in a World of Giants: Canada-Netherlands Cooperation on Trusted and Responsible AI". This proposed fellowship invites a researcher to examine what the Netherlands can learn from Canada’s AI ecosystem and how both countries can work together more closely in areas of shared strategic interest.
Who can submit a call for proposals
This Call for proposals is open to all PhD graduates at any of the following research organisations and to 'lectoren' and senior researchers of universities of applied sciences:
Universities and universities of applied sciences, as described in Section 1.8, subsection 1 of the Dutch Higher Education and Research Act, or universities referred to in the Policy Rules for Universities in the Kingdom of the Netherlands;
university medical centres, as described in Section 1.13, subsection 1 of the Higher Education and Research Act;
KNAW institutes and NWO institutesKNAW institutesNWO institutes;
Netherlands Cancer Institute;
Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen;
Naturalis Biodiversity Center;
Advanced Research Centre for NanoLithography (ARCNL);
Princess Máxima Center;
IHE Delft Institute for Water Education;
TO2 institutions.
The contract of the applicant should be running at least until the
end of the fellowship period. Researchers who did not obtain their PhD
degree yet, but whose PhD date is fixed are also eligible to submit a
proposal. However, they must have obtained their PhD degree at the
start of the fellowship.
