The Netherlands & Hai Phong: Partners from Port to Sea - Vietnam
The Netherlands & Hai Phong: Partners from Port to Sea
Last week, Ambassador Remco Van Wijngaarden met Mr Do Thanh Trung, Chairman of the Hai Phong People’s Committee. The two sides discussed cooperation opportunities in shipbuilding, logistics, smart and green port development, sustainable dredging, inland waterway and water management.
Hai Phong offers significant room for port development, with an
ambitious plan for a major logistics hub in Lach Huyen and a
fast-growing shipbuilding market. Today, 17 Dutch investment projects
worth USD 374 million are already active in the city, including the
Damen Song Cam Shipyard. Dutch companies bring advanced engineering
expertise and custom-made solutions. Combined with Hai Phong’s
competitive costs and manufacturing capacity, this is a strong match
for delivering high-quality products and services.
During this visit, the Ambassador attended and gave the opening remarks at an Offshore Sand Mining seminar hosted by Royal IHC together with Nam Trieu Shipbuilding Industry Corporation.
With river sand becoming scarce and demand from infrastructure projects continuing to grow, sustainable offshore sand sourcing offers Vietnam a viable alternative. The Netherlands supports this at government level, with Deltares and the Netherlands Commission for Environmental Assessment (NCEA) working with Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to draft sustainable guidelines on offshore sand sourcing. Business partnerships, such as the one between Royal IHC and Nam Trieu, bring the technology and shipbuilding capacity to make it happen.
In Hai Phong, the Ambassador also visited Hateco Haiphong International Container Terminal (HHIT) and met with Dutch companies operating in Hai Phong: Royal Van der Leun, Winel B.V., and Damen Song Cam Shipyard.
The Netherlands remains a committed partner to Hai Phong’s maritime and logistics ecosystem as the city grows into a modern, green and sustainable port city.
