80 Years of Freedom: Continuing to Commemorate.
Over the last few months, the Embassy has worked with local partners to continue to commemorate, remember and express our gratitude in light of 80 Years of Freedom.
Embassy Dutch Veterans Day
We are proud to express our gratitude to our military veterans, who have protected our shared values of freedom, democracy, and human rights through their service worldwide. To pay tribute, the Embassy hosted the second Dutch Veterans Day.
The event honoured and recognised all Dutch veterans, with special attention to those living in the United Kingdom. Around forty veterans gathered for the day, which was opened by Lieutenant Colonel Stefan Klabbers and followed by remarks from Deputy Ambassador Annemijn van den Broek. She emphasised the invaluable contribution of veterans in safeguarding international security and humanity, while also reflecting on the security challenges of today.
Helmets Full of Stories
At the centre of the evening was the moving photo exhibition "Helmen Vol Verhalen" (Helmets Full of Stories), initiated by veteran and artist Amy van Son @2020helmen.
The project pairs veterans with artists to transform personal mission stories into powerful works of art. In her introduction, Amy highlighted not only the stories of service but also the vital role of the home front. The spirit of connection and recognition was tangible as participants explored the exhibition, shared experiences and memories, and enjoyed a traditional 'blauwe hap' (Indonesian-style meal).
This year, as we mark 80 Years of Freedom, we are reminded that our veterans carry the weight of history on their shoulders. Their courage, resilience and dedication continue to inspire us all.
Local pupils commemorate with flowers at the Netherlands Field of Honour in London.
Sixty children from local Barnet schools near the Netherlands Field of Honour of Mill Hill Cemetery participated in the annual commemorative flower ceremony. This ceremony at Mill Hill mirrors and complements one conducted by pupils in the Netherlands each September around the time of Market Garden.
This year marked the fifth annual Act of Commemoration arranged by the Barnet War Memorials Association, and 80 Years of Freedom. At 1 pm, the pupils enjoyed the opportunity to interact and ask questions with three members of staff from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission at a few of the individual graves before gathering for the memorial ceremony itself.
The Defence Team of the Dutch Embassy attended the ceremony. Dutch Captain Rick Ongering and the Mayor of Barnet reflected on the 80th anniversary of remembrance and thanked all the pupils for their wonderful efforts.
The pupils were invited to lay individual flowers at each grave, and two pupils read accounts from the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah. It was incredibly moving to listen to a young pupil play the Last Post on his bugle whilst two other pupils hung the Dutch and British flags at half-mast. After the official ceremony concluded, several pupils had more questions about those laid to rest at the Netherlands Field of Honour.
