Netherlands and the UK: North Sea Neighbours
The bilateral relationship between the Netherlands and the United Kingdom has a long and diverse history. With the North Sea as our shared border, the Netherlands and the UK cooperate in a wide variety of policy areas, varying from energy, defense and trade to education, judicial and cultural.
The rich relationship is on display during the North Sea Neighbour Conference (NSN), organised every one or two years. The purpose of the conference, first organised in 2000, is to foster closer cooperation and dialogue between the Netherlands and the United Kingdom on various issues of common interest.
North Sea Neighbours conferences have become a forum where the most influential commentators, policymakers, politicians, business leaders, academics and civil society representatives from both sides of the North Sea come together to pool ideas, expertise and best practice, and create lasting relationships, alliances and networks. Policy priorities
The political department engages with stakeholders in the UK about both domestic and foreign policy. Priorities include international cooperation in the support of Ukraine. Both the Netherlands and the UK are among Ukraine’s strongest supporters and cooperate in different formats, including the Coalition of the Willing, to ensure Ukraine receives the support it requires – not only military, but also on institutional support, economy and trade, as well as cooperation on accountability for crimes committed during the war.
