A Summary of Late Summer
From the 5th to the 7th of September Bozcaada Jazz Festival 2025 will take place on the picturesque Bozcaada Island. This festival included Martijn Blom at a sustainable vineyards panel discussion, and a performance by Sanem Kalfa on Saturday 6th plus pop-up concerts by Teis Semey.
September also saw the Ayvalik Film Festival from the 16th to the 21st of September. The event featured a variety of Dutch films including a special event that combined a Screening of Dutch film “The Brilliant Biograph: Earliest Moving Images of Europe (1897–1902)” accompanied by a live piano performance by Dutch musician Daan van den Hurk. The event was followed by a talk exploring the relationship between music and film. Other screenings included Dutch co-produced films “The Blue Trail” and “New Dawn Fades” (with director’s participation to festival) and Dutch produced film “Happiness” (with director’s participation).
September 20th saw the start of the Istanbul Biennial and brought international cultural creatives such as Ola Hassanain, (an artist based in the Netherlands), to show her work "Tell the Waters What the Clay Kept Secret" (2023) plus ‘Motherboards’ by Selma Selman. In parallel, Fahrettin Örenli displayed his exhibition ‘Abandoned Bended City’ (Sept 21st to Nov 23rd),
From the 27th of September until the 12th of October, 212 Photography hosted an exhibition of the works of the late Erwin Olaf, an internationally acclaimed photographer whose legacy lives on through a special foundation.
On the 3rd of October, Dutch artist, designer and curator Erik Kessels, was in Istanbul for ‘A Midnight Picture Show’ followed by a workshop, ‘Personality Before Portfolio’ on the 4th and 5th at FiLBooks, whilst October also saw an incredible collaboration with IKSV THEATRE bringing Scapino Ballet: to Istanbul for performances of their acclaimed show ‘Cathedral’ on the 20th and 21st.
The popular thematic talks series Istanbul Modern: Museums Talk continues with Taco Dibbits of the Rijksmuseumspeaking on Tuesday November the 20th.
