Culture and Exchange

Connecting people through culture

Culture has long been part of the relationship between Thailand and the Netherlands. Today, we continue to build on this connection through art, design, architecture and cultural exchange. The Netherlands Embassy in Bangkok works with Thai cultural organisations, artists and creative professionals to bring people and ideas together. We support opportunities for Dutch and Thai artists to share their work, learn from each other and reach new audiences, with particular attention to young people and emerging talent

Contemporary art and cultural exchange

Bangkok has a growing contemporary art scene, with museums, galleries and independent cultural spaces bringing together artists from Thailand and around the world. The Embassy works with local cultural partners to encourage exchanges between Dutch and Thai artists and cultural organisations. Exhibitions, film screenings, talks and other activities offer opportunities to discover different perspectives and discuss topics that matter to both countries.

Design, architecture and creative cities

Dutch design and architecture are known for their practical and creative approaches to urban challenges. In Thailand, Dutch architects and designers contribute ideas on public spaces, sustainability and how cities can become more liveable. Bangkok Design Week provides opportunities for Dutch and Thai creative professionals to exchange ideas. The Embassy has supported activities that bring together architects, designers and local partners to discuss the future of cities. Dutch architecture is also part of Bangkok's changing urban landscape. Dutch architecture firm MVRDV has developed a concept for a pedestrian and cycling bridge across the Chao Phraya River, connecting the historic Song Wat area with Thonburi.

Shared heritage

Thailand and the Netherlands share more than 400 years of history. Our shared heritage offers opportunities to learn about the past and explore how our countries have influenced each other. The Embassy works with museums, researchers and cultural organisations to support research, education and public discussions about this history. In 2026, the Embassy organised the Shared Heritage Forum, Mapping the Material Culture of a Maritime World, bringing together researchers and cultural partners in Bangkok and Ayutthaya to explore the historical connections between Thailand, the Netherlands and the wider maritime region.

Baan Hollanda in Ayutthaya is another example of our shared history. Located on the site of a former Dutch trading post, the museum tells the story of Dutch-Thai relations dating back to the 17th century. Read more about our shared history.

Connecting young people through culture

Young people play an important role in cultural exchange. The Embassy supports activities that encourage creativity, learning and the exchange of ideas between Dutch and Thai communities. By working with cultural institutions, artists and educational partners, we aim to give young people opportunities to discover new perspectives, develop skills and take part in cultural activities.
