Resilient cities - Sweden

Resilient cities

Finding solutions together

The Netherlands and Sweden inspire each other to create more sustainable and resilient cities. Our trade and business development team provides opportunities for stakeholders from both countries to meet.

Let's connect

Our colleagues are happy to help you!

Across the world, cities are growing rapidly - around 70% of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by 2050. At present that figure is 55%. The increase in urban population presents several urgent challenges, putting substantial strain on resources. How do we make our urban environments climate neutral and resilient?

The embassy’s trade & innovation team in Stockholm and the regional business developer in Gothenburg monitor the latest technological developments to create more sustainable cities. We build a network of public and private stakeholders in the Netherlands and Sweden and provide opportunities for them to meet.

Sustainable built environment

Our cities need to become circular, designed for adaptability and reuse. A built environment that uses low-carbon materials and recovers used resources.

We have created a strategic roadmap with the goal to increase sustainable, circular and digital innovation and business development between the Netherlands and the Nordics. The focus is on the construction and management of buildings and more efficient energy systems.

In the autumn of 2020, some 120 Dutch and Nordic actors met during two online events to exchange information, identify shared challenges and explore future collaboration. These events were followed by the publication of market studies, various webinars and roundtable sessions in 2021 and in 2022 a business delegation visited south Sweden. In May 2022, our embassy supported 15 Dutch businesses by setting up a Netherlands business lounge at Nordbygg, the Nordic region’s largest meeting place for the building and construction industry. Connecting them to relevant Swedish partners, we provided new opportunities for sustainable solutions for the built environment sector in Sweden.
