JOB DESCRIPTION
We are
looking for a driver for the Ambassador of the Kingdom
of the Netherlands in Madrid.
The driver must have thorough knowledge
of applicable traffic rules and regulations (ability
to drive, topography, route planning, car mechanics,
etc.).
This job
profile furthermore requires flexibility, planning and
ability to work well under pressure. Having knowledge of
the Spanish language is a prerequisite, knowledge of the
English language is at B1-level is required. Moreover, a
customer-oriented approach is of high importance for
this position. Since the person at times will be a point
of contact for internal and external clients,
professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills
are of utmost importance. T
he
ability to work together and loyalty to the Embassy team
is a necessity.
The
position
is one of trust, discretion, responsibility, integrity
and transparency.
The
driver should be willing to make (paid or time off in
lieu) overtime. Due to the nature of the role, the
senior driver (= the Ambassador’s driver) will spend
part of the time at the residence and/or travelling
around Spain.
The
Embassy vehicles are easy identifiable for other road
users and are therefore representing the Netherlands
Embassy on the road. The behaviour of the driver and his
/ her participation in the traffic should reflect this.
The driver has to be aware that he / she is a
professional representative of the Embassy of the
Kingdom of the Netherlands at all times.
The
driver maintains regular contact with the Ambassador’s
secretary regarding schedules and has access to the
electronic diary. Advises on journey times, traffic
conditions, and roadworks. The driver will be
accountable to the Operational Manager.

RESULT AREA AND RESULTS
- Logistical support
- drive the Ambassador to appointments and manage all transport-related aspects of the schedule of the Ambassador with a high degree of independence
- independently coordinate the punctual fulfilment of appointments listed in the Ambassador’s agenda
- drive when necessary incoming high-level delegations by which protocols, timetables, convoys, predetermined scenarios and driving schedules are applicable
- ensure the smooth running of each journey before, during, and after travel, and take appropriate action in the event of traffic congestion or breakdowns
- determine routes with a high degree of autonomy based on schedules and ensure timely arrival at destinations
- take action in unusual situations during the journey (evasive driving in accordance with traffic regulations finding alternative routes in unforeseen circumstances, etc.)
- ensure safe and secure transportation of passengers and items in the duty car at all times
- Supporting and administrative tasks
- deliver and collect mail / documents / purchases and such
- keep a log of official trips, daily mileage, gas consumption etc.
- assist expat staff with registration of car and application of ID’s
- dispatch of diplomatic pouch and provide support with incoming and outgoing post
- create and maintain a network among fellow drivers and/or other colleagues at other Embassy’s and/or (international) organisations
- support during events at the residence, special occasions or meetings and conferences e.g. setting up chairs, moving light furniture or other tasks that may arise
- perform other supporting tasks and duties as required
- Maintenance
- ensure maintenance is completed within set deadlines, taking into account schedules so that the Ambassador’s car is always available when required
- responsible for the routine maintenance of official vehicles, including coordinating and overseeing maintenance of both the Ambassador’s official car and the Embassy’s vehicles
- perform day-to-day servicing of the vehicles to ensure that the exterior and interior of the vehicles are spotlessly clean inside and out, and well maintained up to the established
- carry out basic vehicle maintenance and minor repairs
- provide support at the residence
- other tasks not specified in this document, as requested by the management team
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
- Knowledge of the road network in Madrid including locations of Embassies, Ministries and other important central institutions;
- Good topographical and practical knowledge of the city of Madrid and its surroundings, as well as the Spanish road network in general;
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a similar position;
- Excellent driving skills, driving license without loss of points;
- Ability to read maps and use GPS devices;
- Knowledge of the Spanish language is a prerequisite, knowledge of English is a requirement;
- Social skills (addressing others correctly, being friendly and helpful towards the passengers);
- Ability to assess dangerous traffic and safety-threatening situations and to take measures to prevent and avoid them;
- Experience in driving with motorcades;
- Possession of a valid First Aid qualification would be welcome;
- MS Office computer skills such as Outlook, Word and Excel;

ABOUT THE EMBASSY
The embassy in Madrid represents Dutch interests in Spain and forms part of the network of diplomatic missions worldwide, run by the ministry of Foreign Affairs. We work in a broad range of policy and operational areas. From political to social affairs, from security to economy and trade, from agriculture to consular affairs and from culture to migration. In order to do our work, we have a broad network among the central and local authorities, politicians, the private sector, civil society, journalists, academia, cultural institutions and the Dutch community in Spain.
The Embassy is located in one of the Cuatro Torres in the North of Madrid, which offers a spacious and light office space with magnificent views of the city and the Sierra. We currently have around 60 employees, including interns and trainees. We have around 15 diplomatic staff members, that either work for the ministry of Foreign Affairs or other ministries or governmental organisations. The majority of the team consists of locally recruited staff. Outside Madrid, there is also a Netherlands Business Support Office with staff in Barcelona and Valencia, and we have a network of 9 Honorary Consuls located in different areas in Spain with strong ties with the Netherlands for consular or economic reasons.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS
The Embassy of the Kingdom of
the Netherlands in Spain offers a Spanish full-time,
indefinite employment contract. It concerns a local
position with corresponding salary and employment
conditions of the Dutch Embassy in Spain. Working
conditions are governed by Spanish laws and regulations
and the regulations of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign
Affairs (Legal Status Regulations for Local Employees
2020 (RLW 2020), established by the Minister of Foreign
Affairs as well as the related elaboration for the
mission in Spain.
