NL in the News: Meet a Singaporean Textile Designer Based in the Netherlands
In this timely CNA Insider feature that also looks at the disproportionate impact of the global textile waste on certain communities, watch how Anabel “confronts fast fashion’s waste crisis, building a bridge between Ghana’s upcyclers and Europe while redefining home, identity, and purpose”.
Meet Anabel Poh, a Singaporean textile designer based in Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Together with her Dutch friend and business partner, Daan Sonnemans, Annabel runs the Kantamanto Social Club, a non-profit named after the Kantamanto Market in Accra, Ghana, that provides a platform for the large community of innovative textile upcyclers who turn textile waste into new creations.
Anabel is also involved at The New Materialist, a living lab where she researches and devises futuristic biomaterials (water-resistant fabric made from tomato skin for instance). In her day job, Annabel designs materials for automotive and fashion companies.
This spirit of innovation translates into other areas as well. Check out her version of Stamppot, a traditional Dutch dish, and Babi Pongteh, a Singaporean Peranakan classic!
