The Netherlands and Pakistan celebrated 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations and both countries pledged to continue further strengthening bilateral, economic and cultural ties for a prosperous future.

The Kingdom of the Netherlands established formal diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in July 1948; however, economic cooperation between two countries started already 400 years ago, with the founding of a Dutch trading post on the coast of Sindh in Thatta.

Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Mrs Sherry Rehman was the chief guest. Senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, government dignitaries, representatives of the diplomatic corps, civil society, journalists and business community attended the ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador of the Netherlands Mrs Henny de Vries said the celebration not only highlights the depth of partnership between both countries, but also serves as a testament to the power of collaboration and friendship. She said the Netherlands and Pakistan have forged a strong bond, and will work towards promoting sustainable development, addressing climate change, and fostering innovation.

Senator Sherry Rehman said Pakistan values its longstanding relations with the Netherlands, and thanked the consistent Dutch support to address Pakistan’s climate issues especially in the wake of last year’s floods. “Pakistan looks forward to further enhancing our bilateral relationship, and is eager to learn from the Dutch expertise about disaster risk reduction, water and flood management, and this mutual cooperation is the highlight of our 75 years-old friendship,” she added.

The ceremony also marked the birthday of his Majesty the King of the Netherlands, Willem-Alexander. On the sidelines of the reception, a photo exhibition titled ‘After Us The Deluge’ - the work of renowned Dutch photographer Kadir van Lohuizen was presented. It showcased the impact of rising sea levels caused by global warming on communities.
