Samoa Pride Week 2026 - New Zealand
Samoa Pride Week 2026
Our embassy had the honor of supporting the launch of Samoa’s first ever Pride Week running from 22 to 27 June. Pieter van Sloten, the embassy’s Senior Advisor on Pacific Affairs, travelled to Apia to support the historic event and celebrate with rainbow communities.
The launch of Samoa Pride Week, which was led by the NGO Brown Girl Woke, marks an important moment for visibility, dignity, and inclusion of LGBTIQ+ persons in Samoa. Pride is a celebration of diversity, community, friendship, and joy - but it is also something deeper: a reminder that every person should be able to live safely and honestly without having to hide who they are in order to be respected, protected, or loved.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of Pride Week, Pieter underlined the Netherlands’ longstanding commitment to equal rights for LGBTIQ+ persons as a human rights priority. He also highlighted the importance of practical support, safe spaces, access to healthcare and mental health support, and public education for LGBTIQ+ communities.
Our embassy is also pleased to share that this week also marks the launch of a new coalition focused on equality and inclusion, bringing together Brown Girl Woke, the Samoa Fa’afafine Association, and the Samoa Deaf Association. This broad coalition matters because the Kingdom of the Netherlands firmly believes that a strong civil society is essential for a healthy and inclusive democratic society.
Pieter also reflected on WorldPride 2026, which will be hosted in Amsterdam this year, marking 25 years of marriage equality in the Netherlands, 30 years of Pride Amsterdam, and 80 years of COC Netherlands.
Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten’s words that “Love comes in many different forms, and all of them should be celebrated, every day of every month” captured the spirit of the evening. Pride is not only about one week, one month, or one event. It is about the kind of society we choose to build every day: one where people can live openly, safely, and with dignity.
Fa’afetai lava to Brown Girl Woke, the Samoa Fa’afafine Association, the Samoa Deaf Association, and all organisers, partners, allies, and members of the LGBTIQ+ community of Samoa for a joyful and meaningful opening of Samoa Pride Week.
