Last month, on the first of December, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, together with the Dutch Police, Defence and Customs attachés, hosted a panel discussion on transnational organized crime, that brought together experts from New Zealand and the Netherlands to reflect on shared challenges and opportunities for international cooperation. The discussion underscored how close collaboration across borders and sectors is essential to protect democratic institutions and strengthen societal resilience.

Combining forces against transnational organized crime

The event opened with a keynote address by Gert-Jan Buitendijk, Secretary-General of the Dutch Ministry of General Affairs, who emphasized the growing impact of transnational organzed crime on societies and countries worldwide. He highlighted that while criminal networks operate across borders, governments and institutions must respond in a coordinated and equally international manner.

Thanks to the diverse perspectives of the NZ Police, NZ Customs and the Dutch Police Attaché, we explored practical examples and steps to improve cooperation across different sectors of the security ecosystem. Despite the geographical distance between New Zealand and the Netherlands, panellists noted striking similarities in the way transnational organized crime manifests itself, including through corruption, illicit financial flows and attempts to undermine public trust in institutions.

The diversity of perspectives on the panel contributed to a rich and forward-looking exchange, highlighting both successes and ongoing challenges. While there is no single solution to transnational organized crime, the discussion reinforced that cooperation, trust and sustained engagement between partners are key ingredients for an effective response.

The Embassy looks back on an insightful and constructive discussion that strengthened mutual understanding and reinforced the shared commitment of New Zealand and the Netherlands to combating transnational organized crime together.
