News item | 25-06-2026 | 17:49
The FIFA World Cup takes place between June 11 and July 19, 2026, primarily in the United States. However, the Netherlands will also play a match in Mexico on Monday, June 29, 2026, in Monterrey. We have compiled some important information so that Dutch citizens can travel well-prepared and safely enjoy the 2026 World Cup and their visit to Mexico.
General tips:
• Keep digital and paper copies of your passport, flight ticket,
and travel insurance, and share them with family or friends back home.
• Make sure to have an adequate travel insurance or health
insurance coverage that applies abroad.
• Avoid going into remote streets after dark; stay within tourist areas.
• Alcohol and drug use are prohibited in public spaces.
• Smoking is not permitted in all public areas. E-cigarettes and
vapes are banned in Mexico; importing them can result in a fine.
• Download de KNVB
Oranje app to stay up to date about all fan events surrounding
the matches.
• Need the police or an ambulance? Call 911.
Travel:
• Overland (driving or walking from the United States into Mexico):
You will receive an "FMM Terrestre" (land-entry tourist
permit) if you stay in Mexico for more than 7 days. In this case, you
must pay a fee and are granted permission to stay in Mexico for 180
days (Instituto
Nacional de Migración – Forma Migratoria Múltiple). If you stay
for less than 7 days, you do not need to pay the tourist fee.
• Crossing the border by car from the US: You need a temporary
import permit (“Permiso de importación temporal”). You can apply for
this permit between 10 and 60 days in advance via Banjercito (“Importación
Temporal de Vehículos”). US car insurance is not sufficient; you
must also obtain Mexican car insurance. Many insurance companies offer
short-term tourist policies.
• By air: You will receive an entry stamp in your passport. Pay
close attention to the number of days written in the stamp. Tourists
are granted a stay of up to 180 days in Mexico. Ensure you are granted
enough days for your planned stay.
• If you lose your passport, the embassy can issue an emergency
travel document (laissez-passer) to allow you to leave Mexico.
This document does not permit travel to or via the
United States; travel is restricted to direct routes to Europe.
Therefore, be extra careful with your passport!
• Consult here the
general travel advise for Mexico of the Netherlands’ Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, for your information.
Climate:
• The World Cup takes place during the rainy season. This means
heavy rainfall can occur over short periods, often leading to flooded streets.
• June and July are hot months. Especially in Monterrey, you should
be prepared for extreme heat, as temperatures can reach up to 45
degrees Celsius. Ensure you stay well-hydrated and protected from the sun.
Demonstrations:
• Demonstrations and protests may take place during the World Cup.
Stay away from such protests. You can stay informed through your hotel
and the Mexican authorities (e.g., via news reports).
Fan zones:
• Special fan zones are located in the various host cities such as
Monterrey.
It is free in principle, but admission depends on capacity. VIP
tickets are also available for purchase. Specific rules apply here,
including regulations regarding alcohol consumption. Follow the
instructions of local authorities.
Do you need any assistance? Emergency services are present in the
fan zones. The tourist police can also assist you in English.
Our consular team will be there to assist you, look for our
half-blue, half-orange shirts. We wish you a wonderful time on your
trip to Mexico, and lots of fun with the Dutch national team's game in Monterrey!
