Opening of exciting “Great Stories about Dutch People” exhibition
Just before the biggest event in Klaipėda, Jūrų Šventė, we opened the exciting “Great Stories about Dutch People” exhibition at the Lietuvos jūrų muziejus.
This exhibition highlights the deep historical and contemporary
connections between the Netherlands and Klaipėda — from the
16th-century Dutch shipbuilders like Jan Jacobsen who built the first
sea-going sailing ships here, to Dutch cartographers who first mapped
our coastline, and the lasting influence on Klaipėda’s architecture
and fortifications.
It also showcases the significant
economic and maritime ties between our regions over the centuries,
connecting those historic links with today’s offshore wind energy
initiatives in Klaipėda.
As our Ambassador Jack Twiss Quarles van Ufford perfectly puts it:
"Klaipėda and the Netherlands share a long history connected by
the sea — from sailing and trading to shipbuilding, and from bricks to
beer brewing. These ties have shaped both our nations over the
centuries."
And the journey doesn’t stop here! This
exhibition is traveling, with Klaipėda as its first stop during Jūrų
Šventė, bringing these fascinating stories to new audiences.
Come visit us at these locations and dive into the remarkable shared
history that continues to shape our future!
Klaipėda County: in
August, at the courtyard of the Ieva Simonaitytė Public Library;
