Bucharest Nine (B9) Summit in Vilnius brought together NATO’s Eastern Flank and Nordic Allies, reaffirming unity and deepening commitments to Ukraine, defence spending, and NATO’s collective readiness. The Netherlands strongly supports these efforts, both diplomatically and militarily.

The summit focused on advancing NATO’s deterrence and defense posture. As NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte put it: “We are facing the most dangerous security environment in decades. We are not at war, but we are not at peace either.”

The summit concluded with joint commitments: support for Ukraine’s NATO path, a pledge by Eastern Flank and Nordic countries to boost defence spending towards 5% of GDP, and a call to strengthen NATO’s warfighting readiness. Leaders also stressed the need for closer NATO–EU cooperation and strategic partnerships across the region.

Our Deputy Head of Mission, Zumreta Jahic, had the honour of bidding farewell to Mr Rutte at Vilnius Airport.
