75 years - Jordan-en
75 years of bilateral relations between the Kingdoms of the Netherlands and Jordan
The 1960s, 70s and 80s marked a new era of cooperation, with the
signing of several treaties in the fields of aviation, road transport
and technical cooperation. During the same period, ties between the
two royal families – the House of Orange-Nassau and the Hashemites -
also deepened with a number of official state visits as well as
private visits taking place.
In 1995, after four decades of having its representations based
in other countries, the Netherlands opened its first Embassy in
Jordan. Jordan followed suit in 2000 with the opening of its first
embassy in The Hague. The decades that followed were characterized by
increased coordination, collaboration, and a steady strengthening of
bilateral ties.
In 2019, the Netherlands stepped up its support as Jordan
shouldered the immense responsibility of hosting hundreds of thousands
of Syrian refugees. Since then, the Netherlands has implemented a
comprehensive development programme in Jordan, which spans many areas
of mutual interest.
In 2026, the Netherlands will embark on the next phase of its development programme, centered around four strategic priorities: migration (refugee response), trade and economic development, water, and security and stability.
Jordan has a strong alumni network of more than 500 Jordanian civil servants who have participated in Shiraka courses, Influential Programmes, and other Dutch-supported knowledge and cultural exchange initiatives. These human connections form the foundation of the strong ties between the two countries.
This year, the Netherlands and Jordan will commemorate 75 years of
diplomatic relations, renewing their commitment to strengthened
friendship, partnership and collaboration.
