Tutta un’altra storia - Italy

Tutta un’altra storia 2023 involved a group of boys from the Bologna “Pietro Siciliani” Juvenile Detention Center as jurors and spectators in the Biografilm Festival, with the goal of promoting reintegration into society. From April to June they took part in various activities, such as documentary film screenings, live meetings with film Directors of 3 selected documentary films, and workshops.

They also participated in a peer-to-peer education meeting with a group of 5 teenagers from the Aldini Valeriani Higher Education Institute of Bologna. The teenagers were accompanied by 2 teachers who shared their Metropolitan Oral Poetry Slam performance to inspire the boys in the Juvenile Detention Centre for their final art workshop.

For the creative workshops the mentors of "Tutta un'altra storia" collaborated with the Amsterdam-based Young in Prison within their international exchange project Young Perspectives . Young Perspectives employs international educators and mentors with experience in working in youth detention centers across Europe, proposing different subjects including theater, philosophy, songwriting and soccer as key allies for restorative justice projects.

Finally the boys were invited to participate in the Biografilm Festival as jurors to select the best film for the Tutta un’altra storia Award.

Three Dutch films were selected as part of these activities and competed for the Tutta un'altra storia Award:

Shabu , directed by Shamira Raphaëla and produced by  Tangerine Tree ; 
All You See , directed by Niki Padidar and produced by  mint office films  and 
The Mind Game , directed by Sajid Khan Nasiri, Eefje Blankevoort and Els van Driel . 
The films were screened for the Biografilm audience in cinemas from 9 to 19 June 2023, in the presence of the directors.

The boys from the Juvenile detention centre awarded the Tutta un’altra storia Award to "Shabu" by Shamira Raphaëla because of the similarities with themselves, as they say: ‘When one falls and gets hurt, one gets up again with even more desire to redeem himself, to demonstrate that he can do it. [….] Love combined with personal talent with a pinch of constancy is the superpower of Shabu, and that's what we need too. Seeing a boy of our age achieving his dreams was inspiring’.
