Indonesia is preparing to host the 2026 World Congress on Parole and Probation (WCPP), an international forum focused on advancing alternatives to incarceration and strengthening the global justice system. As the host of the previous congress in 2024, the Netherlands has expressed its full support for Indonesia’s efforts to make the upcoming edition a success.
The Netherlands and Indonesia share a common goal: promoting the use of alternative sanctions and addressing prison overcrowding — a timely focus as Indonesia prepares to implement its new Penal Code in 2026. This collaboration underscores the countries' mutual commitment to justice reform and the rule of law.
In March, Dutch Vice Minister for Sanctions and Protection, Eric Bezem, led a delegation to Jakarta, accompanied by leaders of the Dutch Probation Service. The visit aimed to deepen bilateral cooperation in criminal justice reform and community-based rehabilitation efforts.
Together with Dutch Ambassador to Indonesia Marc Gerritsen, the delegation held high-level discussions with key Indonesian officials, including Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra and Vice Minister of Law and Human Rights Eddy Hiariej. The meetings also brought together academics and civil society representatives to explore long-term strategies for promoting alternative sanctions and strengthening institutional cooperation.
The Netherlands' continued engagement reflects its commitment to supporting justice reform initiatives worldwide, and its close partnership with Indonesia marks a promising path forward for regional and international collaboration in probation and parole systems.
