On 24 September 2025, the Dutch Embassy in Jakarta welcomed an inspiring group of students from the second cohort of the joint minor programme “Future Challenges Lab: Co-creating Sustainable Practices in and Beyond the Indonesian City.”

The programme is a collaboration between the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Universities (LDE) and the University of Indonesia and will run from August to December 2025. In a visit that blended learning, exploration, and meaningful exchange, the students came to deepen their understanding of sustainability and innovation — especially within the fast-evolving energy sector.

From the moment they stepped through the doors of Erasmus Huis, the students were immersed in a series of interactive activities designed to spark ideas and encourage dialogue. Guided tours through the cultural centre gave them a glimpse of how art, knowledge, and policy intersect at the heart of Dutch-Indonesian relations.

The highlight of the day was a set of engaging sessions with Education & Science Counsellor Yvonne Klerks and First Secretary for Economic Affairs Thorsten Roobeek. Together, they shared insights into the Netherlands’ work in the fields of energy, sustainability, and international cooperation — and how students can play a key role in shaping that future.

Discussions ranged from the practical challenges of renewable energy implementation to the power of international collaboration in solving global issues. The students were encouraged to think critically and creatively about how their own academic work could contribute to real-world change.

Their visit was not only a chance to learn, but also a celebration of shared commitment to co-creating sustainable urban futures — both in Indonesia and beyond.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the students and their programme coordinators for making the visit both insightful and energizing. We wish them great success as they embark on their joint minor journey over the coming months.
