UN 2023 Water Conference: Uniting the World for Water
Water is the biggest deal breaker to achieve many Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through close linkage with climate, energy, food security, poverty, gender equality and health. Moreover, humanity's current way of living is very demanding of water capacity and resources, causing the earth to face distress. Populations keep growing, and more industries and agriculture are getting more water-intensive. This condition has exposed our shared vulnerabilities and reminded us of our common destiny.
However, water does not only present us with challenges. It also presents us with great opportunities. If we understand the complex relations and interlinkages of water better, water can be the deal maker, the leverage point for a green economy, climate resilience and a more sustainable and inclusive world.
Considering this complex context of challenges of and opportunities for international water issues, the UN 2023 Water Conference will take place from 22-24 March 2023, in New York, US. The UN 2023 Water Conference, “Our watershed moment: uniting the world for water”, aims to support the achievement of internationally agreed water-related goals and targets, including those contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The UN 2023 Water Conference is only the beginning. The governments of the Netherlands and Tajikistan, the two co-hosts of the UN 2023 Water Conference, have launched a Water Action Agenda to provide a platform for game-changing initiatives. The aim is to fast-track water action since the world will otherwise miss many water-related goals like the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Commitments made must be tangible and action oriented.
Compared to fifty years ago, we now have a much better understanding of global water challenges and the world has committed to solving many of them. It is hoped that the UN 2023 Water Conference will make more people understand that we need to radically change how water is used, managed and valued.
