A delegation from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, two specialists in child protection, and a team from the National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (NCTV) traveled to Indonesia from 6-10 November 2023.

They planned to visit the Handayani Deradicalization Center and Correctional Facilities to obtain vital insights and strengthen ties with their Indonesian colleagues, Indonesia National Counter Terrorism Agency (BNPT).

Among the most notable events of the trip were the Second Bilateral Consultations on counterterrorism between BNPT and NCTV, and the successful workshop on reintegrating children affiliated with foreign terrorist combatants organized by the Dutch Child Care and Protection Board. Organizations and individuals from the United Nations and Indonesian government were very enthusiastic about the events.

Along with local specialists, the delegation got the chance to meet with a diverse group of officials from Indonesian authorities, international organizations (such as UNDP and UNICEF), and others who are committed to fighting violent extremism and terrorism.

Our embassy and the Directie Veiligheidsbeleid (DVB) set out on a mission right after the NCTV visit. For this reason, on 13-14 November, representatives from our embassy traveled to Central Java to learn more about the UNICEF initiatives that the Dutch government is supporting. In both public and Islamic schools, these initiatives seek to promote acceptance and understanding among students of diverse origins and beliefs.

Within the context of avoiding and fighting violent extremism, this method helps to develop resilient futures in Indonesia by promoting positive behaviors, stimulating critical thinking, and cultivating inclusive norms.

Last but not least, on 15 November in Bogor, we participated in a peacebuilding training where a victim and a former terrorist led a workshop for students. It was an unforgettable experience.
