On 20 May, Deputy Head of Mission Adriaan Palm traveled to North Sumatra to officiate the reopening of the Dutch Consulate in Medan and to inaugurate Firsal Ferial Mutyara as Honorary Consul. This milestone reflects the Netherlands' ongoing commitment to strengthening bilateral ties not just at the national level, but province by province, bringing Dutch engagement closer to the communities and industries that make up Indonesia's rich and diverse fabric.

The visit also included productive discussions with Governor of North Sumatra H.E. Bobby Nasution, centering on two areas of deep mutual interest: sustainable agriculture and renewable energy. North Sumatra's vast agricultural potential and growing focus on green development align naturally with Dutch expertise in these fields, making this a partnership with real, tangible opportunity at its core.

True partnerships are built person by person. To that end, the delegation organized networking sessions with alumni, members of the Indonesia–Netherlands community, and local business associations, fostering the kind of direct, human connections that give diplomatic relationships their lasting strength.

The visit concluded with stops at two of Medan's most storied landmarks: the regal Istana Maimun and the magnificent Tjong A Fie Mansion, reminders that North Sumatra's identity is shaped by centuries of cultural exchange, trade, and cosmopolitan history that the Netherlands has long been a part of.
