Herdenking 15 augustus 2025 - Het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Azië

Op 15 augustus 2025 komen we bij elkaar om het einde* van de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Azië te herdenken. Deze dag markeert het einde van de vijandelijkheden na de Japanse capitulatie in 1945, een moment van grote historische betekenis voor Nederland, Indonesië, Japan en vele andere landen in de regio Azië-Pacific.

De Nederlandse Defensieattaché organiseert - in nauwe samenwerking met de Nederlandse Oorlogsgravenstichting - de herdenking, dit jaar op vier Nederlandse erevelden in Jakarta, Cimahi, Bandung en Surabaya.

Met het overkoepelend thema voor dit jaar, "Leren van het verleden om de toekomst te behouden", ter gelegenheid van het 80 jarig jubileum van het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Azië, is dit een bijzonder moment om te reflecteren op verleden, heden en toekomst. Zeker ook gezien de toegenomen spanningen in de wereld, die ons een verhoogd gevoel van urgentie geven om gezamenlijke inspanningen ter ondersteuning van vrede te faciliteren. Samen, met de verhalen van oorlogsslachtoffers centraal in onze herdenking, bevestigen we onze inzet om de herinnering levend te houden, begrip te bouwen en vrede te bevorderen voor toekomstige generaties.

De Nederlandse Defensieattaché nodigt in deze context Defensieattachés van andere landen die betrokken waren bij de Tweede Wereldoorlog in de regio Azië-Pacific uit om de herdenking op Ereveld Menteng Pulo in Jakarta bij te wonen - waaronder Australië, Canada, de Verenigde Staten, Nieuw-Zeeland, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China en het Verenigd Koninkrijk, naast het Indonesische Ministerie van Defensie en de Indonesische Strijdkrachten. Dit jaar is ervoor gekozen om ook de Japanse Defensieattaché uit te nodigen als een reflectie van de intensievere internationale samenwerking tussen verschillende landen in de regio, met als concreet voorbeeld de eerste deelname van een militaire drielanden eenheid bestaande uit Nederland, Indonesië en Japan aan aanstaande militaire oefeningen in Indonesië.

De herdenking beoogt een gezamenlijke ruimte te bieden voor herinnering en reflectie, zonder de pijn die nog steeds bestaat te ontkennen. Het is een oproep om de verhalen van degenen die de oorlog hebben meegemaakt te blijven herdenken, zodat huidige en volgende generaties van de verhalen kunnen leren en samen een toekomst van vrede en veiligheid voor iedereen kunnen bouwen.

Dat deze herdenking een betekenisvol platform mag zijn in ons gedeeld herinneren en het gezamenlijk werken aan het behoud van de toekomst.

Commemoration 15 August 2025 - The cessation of WWII in Asia

On 15 August 2025, we come together to commemorate the cessation* of the Second World War in Asia. This day marks the end of hostilities following the Japanese surrender in 1945, a moment of profound historical significance for the Netherlands, Indonesia, Japan, and many other nations in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Netherlands Defence Attaché’s Office - in close collaboration with the Netherlands War Graves Foundation - organizes the commemoration, this year at 4 of the Netherlands war cemeteries in Jakarta, Cimahi, Bandung and Surabaya.

With the unified theme for this year “Learning from the past to preserve the future” marking the 80-year anniversary of the end of WWII in Asia, it is a very special moment in time for reflection on past, present and future. Particularly also given increased tensions in the world giving us a heightened sense of urgency around facilitating joint efforts in support of peace. Together, with the stories of war victims at the heart of our remembrance, we reaffirm our commitment to preserving memory, building understanding, and fostering peace for future generations.

In this context, the Netherlands Defence Attaché’s Office continues to invite the Defence Attachés of other countries involved in WWII in the Asia-Pacific region to the commemoration at Ereveld Menteng Pulo in Jakarta - including Australia, Canada, the United States of America, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China and the United Kingdom, alongside the Indonesian Ministry of Defence and Indonesian Armed Forces. This year the choice was made to also invite the Japanese Defence Attaché, mirroring a deepening international collaboration between different countries in the region, witnessed as well by the first-time participation of a 3-nation military unit comprising the Netherlands, Indonesia and Japan in upcoming military exercises in Indonesia.

The commemoration aims to offer a joint space for remembrance and reflection without denying any pain that still exists. It is a call to continue to commemorate the stories of those who experienced the war so that current and next generations can learn from them and together build a future of peace and safety for all.

May this commemoration serve as a meaningful platform in our joint remembrance and in working collectively to preserve the future.
