About La Sirène

La Sirène is the first international collaborative art project by choreographer Junadry Leocaria and artist Richard Kofi. The title refers to a Caribbean spirit that manifests as a beautiful woman with a fishtail. The keeper of the sea’s hidden wisdom, La Sirène lives at the border between our known reality and her supernatural truths.

Under the creative guidance of Leocaria and Kofi, 13 Indonesian-based artists (5 visual artists and 8 dancers) explore how Indonesian, West-African, Caribbean and Dutch heritage, folklore and mythologies empower them in dealing with the past, the present, and the shaping of a future, together. During their residency at Salihara Arts Center, they developed ideas, shared expertise, and worked together to create this interdisciplinary art project.

The Artists

Junadry Leocaria is an eye-catching appearance in the Dutch urban dance theater field. She developed her signature style by combining contemporary dance with Waacking and Caribbean Tambu. Her knowledge of Caribbean immaterial heritage plays a big role in her storytelling and aesthetics.

Artist and curator Richard Kofi makes drawings, collages and video work in which abstract and figurative realities intertwine. This allows him to lay bare how past, present, and future inform one another. Collaboration and co-creation plays a significant role in Kofi’s practice.
