The Dutch Embassy in Indonesia marked its annual King's Day celebrations on April 29, with the theme Football Unites at Erasmus Huis Jakarta, by inviting leading figures from across the Indonesian government, diplomatic community, business sector and cultural institutions.
Among the esteemed guests were Minister of Culture Fadli Zon, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises and Chairman of the Football Association of Indonesia Erick Thohir, and Vice Minister of Culture Giring Ganesha, reflecting the close and diverse ties between the two countries.
In his opening remarks, Dutch Ambassador Marc Gerritsen highlighted the deep-rooted and multifaceted partnership between the Netherlands and Indonesia — from culture and education to trade, governance, and people-to-people engagement.
Symbolizing the enduring friendship, Ambassador Marc shared the story of a meaningful exchange of gifts with Minister Fadli Zon: a traditional Indonesian Keris, offered as a gesture of goodwill, was reciprocated with a symbolic Dutch VOC-era coin — turning the gesture into a traditional exchange that signifies mutual respect and a strengthened bond.
The event also featured a lighthearted yet hopeful moment centered on football diplomacy. Ambassador Marc expressed his enthusiasm for Indonesia’s growing football ambitions, humorously envisioning a future World Cup match between the Netherlands and Indonesia. As a token of encouragement, he presented Minister Erick Thohir with a warm Dutch football scarf — a gesture of friendship and shared sporting spirit.
The celebration was a testament to the dynamic and evolving partnership between the Netherlands and Indonesia, honoring history while looking toward future collaboration across sectors.
