About De Ramp met de Van Imhoff

De ramp met de Van Imhoff en het lot van Duitse burgers in Nederlands-Indië 1940-1945 (The shipwrecking of the Van Imhoff and the fate of German civilians in the Netherlands East Indies 1940-1945) is a book by Ellen Klinkers, Linda Terpstra and Maaike van der Kloet. The book, published in October 2025, tells the history of German presence in Indonesia since the 19th century, with a focus on the Second World War. In this lecture, Maaike van der Kloet will discuss the book, focusing on the shared history of Germany, Indonesia and the Netherlands. Topics will include how Germans and Austrians ended up in Indonesia, their influence in the region and how the fate of the Van Imhoff remains visible in modern-day Indonesia.

Maaike van der Kloet is a senior researcher at the Netherlands Institute of Military History (NIMH) in The Hague, the Netherlands. She specializes in the shared military history of Indonesia and the Netherlands, with a specific interest in the years of the Second World War and the Indonesian Independence War. De ramp met de Van Imhoff is her first co-authored book.
